Vehicle expense deductions for self-employed Canadians go far beyond fuel. Once you establish your business-use percentage via a logbook, that percentage applies to the full range of operating and ownership costs — each with its own documentation requirements and CRA limits.

Operating Expenses (Apply Business-Use % Directly)

  • Fuel and oil — keep all gas receipts, including the date and odometer if possible
  • Insurance premiums — keep annual policy documents and payment receipts
  • Repairs and maintenance — keep invoices from mechanics and service shops
  • License and registration fees — keep renewal notices and payment confirmations
  • Car washes, if the vehicle is used for client-facing business

Ownership Costs — CRA Limits Apply

  • Lease payments: 2025 deduction limit = $1,100/month (before tax). If your lease payment exceeds this, the excess is not deductible.
  • Auto loan interest: 2025 limit = $10/day. Interest beyond this daily cap is non-deductible.
  • Capital Cost Allowance (CCA): for purchased vehicles, claim CCA using Class 10 (30% declining balance) or Class 10.1 (30%) for vehicles over $37,000. The 2025 prescribed cost limit for Class 10.1 is $37,000 before taxes.

Zero-emission vehicles: electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles placed in service after March 18, 2019 may qualify for Class 54 (100% CCA in year one on a net cost of up to $61,000) or Class 55 — check the CRA's current guidance, as these rules are subject to annual updates.
