When you work for yourself in Canada, you report your business income and expenses on Form T2125 (Statement of Business or Professional Activities). The CRA allows you to deduct any expense that was incurred to earn business income — as long as it's reasonable in amount and supported by documentation. Here are the most valuable deductions for Canadian freelancers in 2025.

Core Business Expense Deductions

  • Software subscriptions (project management, accounting, design tools)
  • Professional development — courses, conferences, industry books
  • Professional dues and memberships (associations, unions, licensing fees)
  • Advertising and marketing — social media ads, website hosting, SEO tools
  • Business insurance premiums
  • Bank charges and merchant fees for business accounts
  • Legal and accounting fees related to your business
  • Office supplies and postage

Home Office Deductions

If you work from home regularly and your home workspace is your principal place of business (or you use it exclusively to meet clients), you can deduct a proportional share of home expenses. The calculation is based on the percentage of your home used for business — typically square footage of the workspace divided by total square footage. Eligible expenses include rent or mortgage interest, utilities, internet, property taxes, and maintenance costs.

Technology and Equipment

Computers, phones, cameras, and other equipment used for business can be deducted, but generally through the Capital Cost Allowance (CCA) system rather than as a full immediate deduction. Most computer equipment falls under Class 10 (30% declining balance) or Class 50 (55% declining balance for general-purpose computing equipment). The Immediate Expensing Incentive allows eligible small businesses to fully deduct up to $1.5 million in capital purchases per year — check with your accountant for eligibility.

For 2025, the federal basic personal amount is $16,129. Combined with the self-employment deductions above, many freelancers earning under $60,000 pay significantly less tax than employees at the same income level once all legitimate deductions are applied.

Phone and Internet

  • Claim the business-use percentage of your phone bill (e.g., 70% if used mostly for work)
  • Home internet can be partially deducted if used for business
  • A dedicated business phone line is 100% deductible
  • Keep your phone bills for 6 years — the CRA frequently reviews these claims
